Free Zoom Parent Education Workshop: GIFTED+BIG BEHAVIOR: THERE’S HELP

  • Midwest Academy for Gifted Education 1164 North Milwaukee Avenue Chicago, IL, 60642 United States (map)

This is a 3-part Series on ABA. You are welcome to register for one or more workshop. It includes an episode on ASD, an episode on common daily, non-medical but still frustrating gifted problems, and a “my kid has major challenges that are inflicting daily suffering on my child and on my family and I can’t sleep at night, I am at a loss, HELP!’ episode for your hardest stuff too, so bring it, we got your back. ABA an often misunderstood, frequently not covered by insurance, but very useful tool for a variety of challenges including but not limited to anxiety, executive functioning, starting and completing tasks like homework or chores, compulsive behavior, and other challenges. How does it work? How is it different from other therapies? How is it specifically applicable for gifted children? MAGE dedicated the programming this year exclusively to health supports for the community due to the extra strain placed on the community by the pandemic. We hope to be more balanced with non-health issues in the 2022-2023 year like in previous years! This year, there was so much need in the health area and not enough resources and support.

Electronic Addiction, self harm, hitting, throwing, verbal aggression, low self esteem, school refusal. Doesn’t sound like a gifted kid? Guess again. This happens. It causes shame. Helplessness. Gifted kids are kids. Some kids go supernova. If the kid is gifted, sometimes that makes it all harder, not easier. With the perfect storm of remote learning, lack of consistent socialization, stressed teachers and parents, horrific world events, everyone in masks, constantly changing routines and infinite unpredictability, kids you’d never think would have problems are having problems. Yes, gifted kids are not immune. If they are extra bored at school this year after having some more self directed options before it, it’s even harder. Luckily, there’s ABA and BCBA, and it is something that can be tried at home, in clinic, or at school to help kids that need the help. Once a pattern of behavior that’s not great for your kid sets in, how do you climb out? Here’s how!
